Stories

Short pieces from the team.

Not a blog. Notes from inside the work. We publish a story when we have something to say, and not before.

Engineering

2025-09

Why we built our own delivery fabric.

After a year of paying for managed realtime services that almost-but-not-quite met our own latency targets, we rewrote conversation on top of an Elixir delivery fabric we own end to end. Our products are faster, cheaper to run, and quieter on their worst days. The build took three engineers two quarters.

Design

2025-06

The first hundred milliseconds.

The hardest part of a premium product is not the polish at the end. It is the first hundred milliseconds. The interaction where a person decides whether to trust the surface in front of them. We have rewritten our message-arrival animation eleven times. We will rewrite it again.

Operations

2025-03

A quieter on-call.

We retired four pages of runbook last quarter by changing one timeout. The work that matters is rarely the work that ships. It is the work that stops shipping. A quieter on-call is the most direct measure of the cell's craft.

Trust

2024-12

Verification that respects dignity.

Identity verification is the moment where a product tells someone whether it sees them as a person or as a risk. We made the active choice to keep the experience short, the data minimal, and the claim portable. It would have been easier to keep more. We declined, and we have not regretted it once.
